点评:On its own, the Palazzo Comunale would not be on tourists’ must-see list but it is one of several historic buildings in Piazza della Libertà, Tolentino’s main square. The piazza, which makes it a good starting point to explore the historic centre and it’s very easy to visit, on your way to the Basilica of St Nicholas.
Most of what you see here today, was built in 1860, but the heavy stone arches on ground level have been retained from the original medieval building.
These 5 arches are the most striking feature and create a shaded loggia walkway.
Above them, is a large, central projecting balcony with crests above it. It’s the kind of balcony where you expect someone to stand to make a public appearance and wave at crowds below or where a political leader in the past might have stood to make a formal announcement.
The building was badly affected by the 2016 earthquakes which hit Marche hard. We were not able to go inside.
Opposite, is the 16th century Palazzo Sangallo and to the right is the lovely clock tower, with its four dials showing the phases of the moon, "Italian hours", an astronomical clocking and a calendar clock.
