点评:Tuesday afternoon 22nd August and we walked around the Ancient Market Place in Kingston upon Thames, where this Memorial is located.
It stands at the top end of the Market Place, with the Market and Market House behind it.
The Memorial commemorates Henry Shrubsole, a local business man and politician. He was born in 1816 and died in 1880 aged 64.
During his life he was elected and served as the Borough's mayor on three occasions, 1877, 1878 and 1879. He died in office in 1880.
This is not your typical Memorial bearing some resemblance or association with the person.
This Carrara marble statue depicts a woman wearing a robe holding a urn aloft on her left shoulder. While she holds the hand of a child with her right hand. The child is crouched scooping water with a cup.
The figures stand on a a Cornish granite pedestal, there are four steps leading up to a basin on it's front. Three of the steps continue around the base of the pedestal.
On the westside of the plinth there is a marble profile of Henry Shrubsole.
The steps are a popular meeting place or to sit and have a rest, so difficult to take a photo of the Memorial on it's own.
