点评:It’s all peaceful now, but 100 years ago, and more, the Ruthven Barracks were a vicious watchdog over the Scots. Built on the site of a ruined castle, this military installation operated during the highland clearances and beyond. Now a photogenic ruin, it was a monument to the efforts of the English to “keep us down” according to my Scottish hosts. It would have housed a few dozen soldiers whose job was to protect the King’s road and keep taxes flowing to the south.
This is a quick stop from the A9, but watch for it! If you want a photo from afar stop at layby 114. To get up close you have to circle through Kingussie and get onto the national cycle route. This takes you a few miles off the highway through a tiny village and pastoral farmers’ fields, complete with Highland coos.
