A Cool Magical Village Like a Japanese Brigadoon

点评：I only became aware of this picturesque village from YouTube. Popular Japan-focused channels like "Abroad in Japan" and "Japan by Food" devoted segments to this enticing, self-preserved Shangri-La. The videos motivated my husband and me to visit as a half-day trip from Takayama. It was pretty easy to reserve a bus seat for the 45-minute drive through the lower Japanese Alps. We just made the reservation the day before.
The round-trip ride cost ¥5,600 per person. The bus departed from Takayama Bus Center and dropped us off at a tiny terminal building in a parking lot at the northern end of town. Everything Instagrammable was within walking distance, so 2-1/2 hours was the ideal duration for our visit. The village is populated with Gassho-style houses built without nails from wooden beams with steep slopes and thatched roofs.
They're uniformly designed into triangular shapes to look like a priest's hands meeting in prayer. The first thing to do is to walk up the hill to the observation deck to get a great panoramic view. Once we walked down to the main road, we made a few key stops we recommend. One was Kondou Shoten for a uniquely tasty sake-infused soft serve cone. Another was Kyoshu Coffee Shop for the rich lemonade layer cake and a latte.
Definitely enter the Binen-yumeromu Museum where you can experience the inside of a Gassho-style house and appreciate the concentrated effort to insulate it from inclement weather. You also get a nice view from the third floor. If you make it all the way to the Three Houses, congratulations, it's probably time to head back to the bus. Unless you planned to stay overnight. Not us though. We had laundry to do back in Takayama.
