点评:Historic Campbell’s Store stands on Morpeth’s main thoroughfare, on the corner of Tank St and Swan St.
Today it is one of the town’s big attractions because it houses a collection of 25 antique dealers. However there is a separate Tripadvisor listing for this under 'Morpeth Antique Centre’ so this review is about the house itself, not the antique shops.
The imposing two-storey building is listed as #21 on the Morpeth Heritage Walking Trail.
Built by James Campbell in c1835 and constructed of locally-quarried sandstone and brick, it housed a large and increasingly busy trading store, that operated here for almost 100 years.
During that time Morpeth was enjoying its heyday. Morpeth had the second largest river port in Australia, second only to Sydney, and was a thriving and prosperous centre.
Initially specialising in haberdashery, Campbell’s Store began to attract people from miles around and became something of an emporium, expanding to include food, kitchen utensils, pots and pans, building materials, and clothing.
James Campbell was turning money hand over fist and being an enterprising fellow, he even began minting his own money to be used by patrons. The coins were minted in England and came in both penny and halfpenny denominations.
As the business grew, he built warehouses across the road on the riverbanks. From his upstairs windows, he could look out and survey his businesses. Did he stand there, watching the steamships arrive loaded with the goods that would stock his shelves?
When Morpeth’s river trade started to fall into decline, the building fell into disuse and disrepair. It was refurbished in 1986 and is a very popular tourist attraction now.
