点评:Dual citizens of the US and a non-EU country. On July 20, we exited Botswana and entered Zambia at Kazungula Border, in order to see the Victoria Falls. We always carry both passports with us, and always enter a country with the passport which provides us more freedom in any given country, and which requires less administrative complications. This is our basic right by international laws and the international laws that define the freedom of movement and travel. Thus, on July 20, we exited Botswana at Kazungula Border with our US passport, and entered Zambia visa-free with our other passport, and we encountered no problems at all at the Zambian side.
However, two days later, when we tried to re-enter Botswana at the same border, as we were traveling back to Namibia to return our car, we exited Zambia within seconds on our non-EU passports, and then crossed over to the Botswana side and presented our US passports - which allow us visa-free entry into Botswana. However, one Botswana immigration officer, rude and arrogant, requested that we show her the Zambian stamp - which we did show her in our other passports. She, however, insisted that she "must stamp the same passport" which was stamped in Zambia! (our non-EU passport requires a visa for Botswana and for this reason we used our US passport). I tried to explain to the immigration officer that we have the right by international law to enter a country with the passport that makes entry easier for us, but she continued to be dismissive of our arguments and kept reiterating that she must "stamp the same passport" that was stamped in Zambia.
This is unheard of and in direct conflict with international laws defining free travel, but she refused to let us in and took our non-EU passports, when another problem occurred: she and her colleague then spent half an hour searching through computers, papers, folders, the internet, and different offices - trying to understand what or where our country is! They entered offices and looked very confused and embarrassed, not being able to understand what to do with our passports - and then the same immigration officer, who was determined to create problems to us - decided we needed a transit visa - for which she then charged us almost $ 50 dollars US , and then entered a "visa" in pencil on an improvised stamp.
We filed official complaints to the Botswana Immigration Ministry, but have never heard from them - frankly, do not even expect to, and basically we have no power to alert travelers of the grave breach of international travel conventions committed by Botswana immigration that day.
