点评:The National Palace is very interesting and is located in the charming village of Sintra. The Palace has much to see, including several amazing tiled rooms, including the Grotto of the Baths and the Coat of Arms Room, and the Magpie and Swan rooms. I loved hearing our guide tell us about the Magpie Room (Sala das Pegas) which features a ceiling painted with 136 magpies - see picture. Apparently, King John I had the ceiling painted with magpies because the women of the court were gossiping about him kissing a lady-in-waiting. Each magpie represents one of the gossiping women of the court. There is also a an amazing table cabinet in the Galleon room - see picture. The kitchen is adorned with beautiful pearly white tiles and you can see the inside of the huge conical chimneys. The "Grotto of the Baths" is a bathing area adorned with blue and white azulejo tiles and a blue and white ceiling covered in cherubs and clouds - see pictures. The Coat of Arms Room has a stunning gold coloured ceiling, blue and white tiles depicting various scenes and the coat of arms of 72 of the leading Portuguese noble families - see pictures.
