I didn’t find the Kiwi bird, but I found the Kiwi spirit

点评：What an adventure. In the time I had been on the North Island, I had grown a bit of an obsession with seeing one of the elusive Kiwi Birds; on my last week, I decided to hop on a bus, from Auckland, and prebook an Uber to return.
The guide, Adrian, was extremely knowledgeable, and accommodating to our group. We did hear the Kiwi "shriek"; however I remain vindicated as to why I never tried my hand at the SkyCity. A combination of factors, such as the wind, the rain, the abnormal number of people who visited that day, meant the Kiwi was able to detect us well ahead, and stay clear of us. For anyone trying to see the Kiwi, it is best to plan around New Zealand's erratic weather. Despite that, Tawharanui isn't home to just Kiwis, and we did get to see a pair of takahe birds (perhaps even rarer than the Kiwi).
However, the most memorable part of the adventure happened after the tour. Turns out, Matakana is in quite a remote area; I noticed as such once I arrived, but I had it brutally confirmed to me when my Uber was cancelled. I had been prepared to camp on a nearby bench for a night, but our guide happened by and offered me a lift to a nearby town where the AT was still operating, despite being in the opposite from his itinerary. I'm extremely grateful for Adrian's kindness, and it remains one of the most striking memories i have of NZ and its people.
Unfortunately, it appears not long after my visit, the tour company ceased operations. I hope at the very least my words of appreciation may still be passed on.
