点评:Together with the Great Church of St Bavo, the Town Hall (Stadhuis) is one of the very impressive historic buildings in Haarlem’s lovely central square.
The Town Hall is a good starting point for exploring Haarlem because you will find the Tourist Information Centre (known as VVV Haarlem) on the ground floor.
The building itself is splendid, with its spire-like tower, columns and distinctive red and white contrasting stonework.
Founded in 1370, it has been added to over the years and the elaborate facade that you see here today is mainly the work of the leading master builder, Lieven de Key. It was added during the Dutch Golden Age of the 16th and 17th centuries.
A statue of Lady Justice, standing high up above the main entrance, caught our eye. She wears a golden blindfold and carries a golden set of scales in one hand and a golden sword in the other. Traditionally, Lady Justice has the kind of solemn, stern expression, that is appropriate to someone who takes the business of Justice seriously. However this Lady Justice looks more frivolous than poker-faced. She strikes a rather playful pose, stepping forward to expose one curvy leg. She also seems to have forgotten to put her top on. Instead of staring straight ahead, she looks down upon the square below with a coy smile.
NOTE: We later learnt that you can visit the courtyard free of charge. We didn’t find this out until too late, but it’s worth investigating if you have the time.
