点评:Cellardyke’s old harbour used to be known as Skinfast Haven, and it was once an important Scottish fishing port that had over 200 vessels operating out of it in the 1880s. In fact the name Cellardyke is derived from ‘Sil’erdykes’ - which originated from the multitude of silver , shining herring 🐟, glinting in nets hung over the dykes ( walls) , and the residents were known as Dykers.
Now , it’s a peaceful sleepy harbour with clear water, that’s only used by a few local creel boats & leisure craft, and reveals a small strip of sand when the tide’s out.
It’s charm is amplified in the attractive cluster of white-washed buildings with red-pantile roofs, maritime decor, and plant-pots that surround it.
In good weather, residents sit outside their homes with tables & chairs to enjoy camaraderie, and washing dries where fishing nets once were stretched out. There are information boards to be found on the area, and would recommend a walk to neighbouring Anstruther to absorb the character of these lovely East Neuk villages.
