点评:We had really high expectations for a surfing trip here. It didn't meet then and I don't think I would go back.
Good:
- The waves are really fun when you catch them, and pretty friendly. With the surf we had you could catch 2-3 waves per walk/boat ride
- Surf House Chicama is awesome. Great vibe and people
- It's Peru, so the ceviche is universally excellent
- The newish boardwalk makes for a great oceanfront strip
- There are some really excellent dogs and cats
- You can have a great day without hiring a boat
Now the bad:
- Aside from the waves themselves, the surfing is a lot more complex and harder than we expected. Specifically:
- The current is consistently very strong, which means you have to paddle to stay in the takeoff zone, paddle in when you are done, and paddle a lot to reposition between rides, as well as paddling out. Basically expect to be paddling the entire time and come with fitness for that
- The waves aren't breaking consistently in one place - they often break 50 yards to the right or left. This makes the surfing fairly fast paced
- The constant wind helps in some ways (better shaped waves), but is strong enough that it impacts your position and will blow you off your board on a wave sometimes
- We felt mixed about the boats (we surfed some days with them and some without them). They reduce your paddling a bit (although less than you'd expect - still plan on paddling all day). The communication with them is very fast paced and not very relaxed
- If you hire a lesson, it's more like a guide who will get in the boat with you and give you a push on some waves. Don't expect much instruction!
- The town feels stuck in a funny place where it's prices reflect tourist infrastructure but the infrastructure isn't quite there. Expect things to only sort of work (similar to a lot of South America) (ex: a restaurant with a sign saying they take Visa doesn't take Visa). We felt price gouged on a few things (maybe because we were gringos... but that's still not mature for a tourist town).
Overall it's a good place to go surfing, but if you are going to travel you can find better ones!
