A great tour of Northern Greece

点评：We went on a private tour of northern Greece organised by Arcas Travel, with Dimitris taking us round, and it was brilliant! We went to wonderful archaeological sites, including Philippi, Amfipoli, Pella and Vergina, the really interesting city of Thesaloniki, as well as seeing stunning scenery, especially at Kastoria, a town by the side of a beautiful lake; the amazing waterfalls at Edessa; the mountainous scenery on the journey across northern Greece, ending up at Ioannina, a lovely town again around a lake.
Dimitris was a wonderful guide, who, although he couldn't specifically guide us round the archaeological sites (in Greece only the official guides are allowed to act as guides at such sites), knew a lot about the archaeology and history, both ancient and more modern. We learned a lot about Macedonian history (Alexander the Great, his father Philip II etc): the Roman presence in Greece; the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires; and more recently the Second World War and the subsequent Greek Civil War. It was particularly interesting to learn that a national holiday in Greece while we were there is called 'No Day', when, during the Second World War, Mussolini and the fascists tried to invade Greece, and the Greeks said 'No', resisting them.
We would recommend a similar tour to anyone - having not known a lot about northern Greece, it's such an interesting, beautiful part of the country. And we had sunshine every day!
