点评:Those kind enough to to follow my myriad travel feature articles over the years will know that I don't normally write a second piece about an attraction hotel, island or eaterie et al that I have enjoyed visiting previously... unless there is something new to report..!
Here, I am delighted to say that the wonderful home of Lancaster 'Just Jane' (the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre), does indeed have something new to report..not only in terms of cracking new artefacts on display since my last visit, but also through the fact that the very long road to getting 'Just Jane' back into the air, to join with the other two flying Lancasters (both here in the UK and over in Canada) carries on apace..!
The story of 'Just Jane' (the only original Lancaster in private hands) is quite something and, sitting in the corner of the large hanger watching the story of 'Just Jane' unfold on a video as I did, (whilst my wing-man 'Nobby' was enjoying a small guided your around the collection's Mosquito 'Wooden Wonder' by a very knowledgeable docent), I was able to pick up yet more fascinating information..
It really is quite an amazing story of two brothers, (the RAF air base was built on their farm in WW-II), acquiring the bomber in memory of their air-gunner brother, tragically lost in an RAF heavy raid over Germany, and the subsequent tale of RAF co-operation alongside thousands of volunteer man-hours spent getting 'Just Jane' transferred up to Lincolnshire on numerous RAF trucks and then pieced back together by RAF & civilian volunteer engineers as a ground-runner.
I won't repeat the incredible tale here, save to say that when you visit the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby (as I know you will ) you will be rivetted when you sit down and actually watch the short video as I did.
Meanwhile then wandering around the large hanger, (it was early November so the Centre's Lancaster & Mosquito..both currently ground runners only) were safely tucked away in the massive hanger), I was also happily surprised to see a third mighty aircraft on view.. a Mitchell B.25 twin-engined medium bomber of the USAAF standing there in its olive-drab finish.. another terrific acquisition whose story (including a famous movie appearance) was there on an interpretation board for all to see.
In addition, within the hanger there appeared to be a number of additional new & wonderful acquisitions in terms of vehicles to supplement the incredible aviation collection that lines the walls and edges of the mighty hanger, all being original ground-dug and recovered artefacts from WW-II British, American & German aircraft that came to grief in the skies over the mighty county of Lancashire..
Furthermore, there was also an original bouncing bomb as designed by Barnes Wallis, a display featuring the instrument panel & control column from one of Guy Gibson's original Lancasters.. plus a video interpretation display explaining 'Operation Manna', the vitally important emergency RAF Lancaster drop of vitally-needed aid to the starving Dutch people in the final week of World War Two...
Having been around WW-II history for most of my adult life, I have to say that all of the displays I inspected at close-hand rival anything put on by other museums..and here I have to, sadly, inject a slightly sour note to my piece.. (not something I normally do!)
Not in terms of this absolutely wonderful and most evocative museum, I have to quickly add, but on the newly opened Bomber Command Centre near Lincoln..a glitzy, money-guzzling, glass & concrete edifice that purports to represent & commemorate the RAF in Lincolnshire, (or 'Bomber County' as it is often called) but to my very disappointed eye is, in fact, a soulless, display-less, character-less museum created, by the looks of it, by thin-spectacles- wearing, 'woke' advertising types based down in London..all working to a civil servant's turgid brief...😒
Last year Nobby & I could not get into East Kirkby as the production crew from 'All Creatures Great & Small' TV show were on site for a day of filming, (and what a set to film on!), so we popped over to inspect that Bomber Command Centre.. and frankly wished we hadn't..for as I say, it is soul-less & somewhat arrogant and, to my mind, has nothing to commend itself in terms of historical displays and the telling of the Bomber Command story in Lincolnshire..!
No unforms, medals and very little kit that I could discern, (but plenty of videos of awkward-looking young actors in ill-fitting RAF uniforms speaking former air crew's written lines) and disgracefully, in one display, there is even a 'woke apology' for the RAF's bombing of Germany.. resulting in the feeling that this whole project was a total waste of the huge amount of money so obviously raised from the 'great and the good' to create & build it..and I wondered how such a fine idea had gone so badly off-track in its final delivery..?
The reason I mention The Lincoln Bomber Command Centre herein, (and I that declined to write another of my Trip Advisor reviews after our visit.. as I had nothing positive to report), is that apart from hoping to prevent other RAF enthusiasts from wasting their money on a visit there, (and possibly feeling similarly upset as I subsequently was), is that the eye-watering sums of money raised for that Bomber Command museum could, (and frankly should), have been more wisely invested over at East Kirkby.. helping to get 'Just Jane' back into the air...and I am genuinely very sad that it wasn't!
To my mind The Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby is the 'real home' of WW-II Bomber Command in 'Bomber County' as it simply oozes the WW-II history of the RAF in this massive county, (with some 40 plus bomber airfields created here during the war), and as you wander around the many surviving RAF buildings at East Kirkby, (including the air-bases' original & evocative chapel), you are just immersed in the county's WW-II aviation history...just wonderful!!
For not only is the privately-owned base now the home of 3 complete and very evocative WW-II aircraft, but every former remaining building and Nissen hut is full of war-time RAF & USAAF aviation artefacts & dioramas, (including a wonderful Home Front museum full of thought-provoking pieces), and so a real 'journey of discovery'..indeed in the gift shop you can even buy small original artefacts taken from 'Just Jane' as original souvenirs of your visit.
However the true spirit emanating from the East Kirkby Aviation Centre is not just the obvious love & affection that the owners, volunteers & visiting pubic have invested in this fabulous place, but there is also an international flavour of co-operation here too..for a small fact I did not know, is that after WW-II some 25 Avro Lancasters were sold or leased to the French Air Force, who flew them for a number of years.
Nobby & I learned on this latest visit is that French enthusiasts with access to parts of those original French-flown Lancaster's are now trading back some of their air-worthy parts back to East Kirkby for use in 'Just Jane's' rebuild, whilst non-airworthy parts & aircraft rebuilds are being traded back to the French in return, so they can also build and operate a ground-running example..so happily in the volunteer Lancaster community, the 'Entente Cordiale' is alive & well...'👌
So if you are an Avro Lancaster bomber-lover and are fascinated by the history of WW-II Bomber Command in Lincolnshire..do yourself a big favour. .give the new Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln a wide berth and head straight for The Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby, because every visitor paying their entrance fee, (and then stopping by their cafe & gift shop too), is most happily contributing to getting 'Just Jane' back into flying condition..
.....and to my mind, there can be no better use of your summer holiday or weekend- break budgets than that..! 😎
