Beautiful little temple dedicated to the Patron Saint.

点评：The "Tempietto di San Gerardo", otherwise known as the Shrine of "S. Gerardo in Marble", is a monument dedicated to the patron saint of the city of Potenza, which is located on the edge of the central Piazza Matteotti close to the Muraglione, from which you can enjoy a splendid panorama.
The building can be attributed to the architect Giuseppe d'Errico, while the bust of the S. Gerardo La Porta of Piacenza was created by the artist Michele Busciolano from Potenza.
The small structure, of clear neoclassical taste, has a semi-octagonal plan and the neo-Renaissance bust of the Saint (depicted in the act of blessing) rests on a pillar on a rectangular stand, according to the canons of ancient temples.
The small temple has the façade of a domed building, with a semicircular plan, closed at the back. Five columns with fluted shafts, decorated with leaf capitals, rest on the stepped base. The columns support a polychrome marble entablature decorated with angels and floral figures.
The inscription on the left recalls two important moments for the city: the invasion of brigands in 1809 and the insurrection of 18 August 1860.
On the back side there is a beautiful polychrome stained glass window. The statue is ideally "framed" by the stained glass window, also supported by two Corinthian columns. The construction probably dates back to the period between 1861 and 1866 when a large sum was allocated by the Municipality of the city for the execution of some works.
It seems that this sacred domed aedicule dedicated to St. Gerard had replaced other domed buildings, which were temporarily erected year after year in the square during the patron saint's festival to provide a backdrop for the performances of the local musical band.
It is worth stopping by for the magnificent panorama that can be enjoyed from the "muragione" and for the interesting history of the Saint.
