点评:We visited and were impressed with the look of the building from the outside. There was no one around to greet us or orientate us, I understand it is run by volunteers presumably someone had opened up and left? We saw no one whilst we were there. The film ‘Ghosts of the Workhouse’ was done well and interesting, as were the documents and artifacts in the entrance. One comment I would make is that whilst it was good to see the original handwritten entries, they were hard to read and a typewritten transcript would have encouraged us to read more.
It was just a very odd visit. I agree with a previous reviewer that it would have been nice to see rooms set up as they would have looked. There were rooms full of art work, all priced up but no one to ask, not even able to buy a bar of soap as there as no honesty box. Some of the artwork was priced and I am not sure what would have stopped anyone from walking out with an item.
The cafe was shut although there seemed to be evidence of someone having eaten earlier.
There was a tent in the middle of one of the courtyards, not sure what it was for, even the ‘way in’ sign was confusing.
We were left puzzling as to what it was, a museum/ historic building or an artists studio. Sadly, without volunteers it just lacks a focus and I don’t think people will get much out of wandering round the buildings you are able to access, some were not accessible.
Such a shame. Personally I would rather pay an entry fee and have an informed tour rather than the current arrangement.
