点评:Perching on a tall pedestal which is towering over a large three-tiered fountain with spouting dolphins and lions, the larger-than-life statue of Charles I Gonzaga is quite a sight. The monument used to stand in the centre of Place Ducale but was moved to Rue Beregovoy (close to the corner of Boulevard Gambetta and Cours Brian) in 1999. While it could be argued that the Italian ruler who founded the new Charleville in the early 17th century deserves a statue at the heart of ‘his’ town, we quite liked the present location. There are several grand buildings, proving a worthy backdrop. The bronze statue of the Duke of Mantua and the other figures are the work of French sculptor Alphonse Théodore Charles Colle (1857-1935), who was born in Charleville. The monument was unveiled in 1899, at a time when the reverence for the Italian city's founder had faded, and it sparked controversy. While exploring Charleville-Mézières, we stumbled upon two other monuments by Colle worth a look: the WW I memorial of Charleville (1923) at Square Winston-Churchill and the one at Place de l'Hôtel de Ville in Mézières (1927).
