Gurez Valley is a gem in Kashmir, offering untouched beauty and serene landscapes. Perfect for adventure seekers and nature lovers, this remote valley is rich in culture and breathtaking scenery.
- Key Highlights:
* Wular Lake: A peaceful stop with stunning views.
* Razdan Pass: Offers panoramic views and an exciting drive.
* Dawar: The main town, home to the Shina Cultural Centre—catch the Saturday cultural show
* Tulail, Sheikhpura, Chakwali: Explore this untouched part of the valley for true solitude. Do head this side for untouched parts of your Gurez trip. Note, the roads aren't great and a lot of construction is going on this strech. An SUV is recommended only for this stretch. Don't need 4*4
* Khandyal Top: A rewarding hike with the best views in Gurez.
* Habba khatum: a pristine river flows at the base. Can just sit there for hours
* There is a Gurez festival which we missed as the dates were moved. Check on the dates for your travel. But know that the dates can shift
- Stay
KTDC Tourist Cottage: Beautiful, comfortable, with a well maintained garden - highly recommend. Contact 9419500029 Ghulam Mohamed for availability - very warm and knowledgeable. Has both private rooms and dorms from Rs. 500-1500.
There are multiple hotels and tent options available in gurez now. Stay is not a challenge anymore.
Note: Camping areas have become very dirty, so see the spot for yourself before booking. Enough available on spot. No need to prebook
- Food
We liked Hilfort Cafe the best: Simple, tasty local dishes in a cozy setting. Multiple cafes are available now - food is not a challenge.
- Commute
Cab: Till dawar, we found Alto to be the most used car - to say roads are majorly good. ~10% is patchy, which most cars can handle. If you go towards tulail, the roads are under construction, so that stretch is better covered in an suv. Can get cabs locally in dawar as well. There are buses also available to reach gurez, but we didn't explore that.
Expect to spend Rs. ~5k per day for SUVs.
Contact Abid bhai from Srinagar for cab +91 70060 80872. We had an amazing time with him, and he took us to many offbeat spots we wouldn't have been able to find ourselves. Highly recommended.
- Network
Jio: Most reliable phone network here. Make sure to have a postpaid sim in Kashmir or get a prepaid one anywhere from Srinagar.
- Safety & People
Carry your Aadhar card for multiple security checks. Locals are warm and hospitable.
- Notes:
Respect the environment: keep the valley clean. Travelers have made the place into a dumping ground with plastic waste everywhere. Do not do this, and be responsible. Request to local authorities: please educate, penalise travelers and invest in garbage disposal or else the valley will very soon loose it's travellers
Days: Usually 3 days is enough to cover Gurez including the travel to and back from Srinagar. We spent 4 days, just because we loved the place.
