点评:*) After floods some thousand years ago, this Vav (well), was fully covered with mud and sand, till in 1960, the archeology department uncovered it and cleared all mud and dust to uncover the fantastic stone art work and step floors going down almost seven stories.
*) One of the most beautiful depictions here is Vishnu as a boar. Depictions of “celestial beauties and those of the elephant god Ganesha, are also quite enchanting.
*) Though not as majestic as Abhaneri Chand Baori near Jaipur, this is far more impressive in terms of architectural decoration.
*) Tourists are not allowed to go more than 6 floor deep, but we were told that around the back (off-limits to the public) is a deep circular well, the walls of which are lined with more exquisite carvings (something similar to Bai Harir ki Vav or Adalaj Stepwell).
*) It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is very well-maintained and clean. The stepwell is within a huge complex with lots of landscaping & greenery around.
*) The stepwell is surrounded by an unsightly-looking railing. The railing extends down on either side of the inside of the stepwell too, to act as a guardrail to prevent visitors touching the profuse stone carvings lining the walls. Many rows of steps lead down, in a crisscross fashion, to the depths of the vav, with ornate carved pillars, ceilings, and walls all along the way.
*) Entrance fees are Rs 35 per adult Indian. Even if you go right down to the lowest accessible level, it takes only about half an hour to see this, unless you’re interested in closely viewing each of the carvings.
*) The security inside the monument are very courteous and helpful, offering to click pictures at vantage points. They also offer insight into the history and point out stuff of significance in the stepwell.
