Amazing small zoo that deserves more attention
Brevard Zoo的点评
点评：We are zoo geeks, often traveling places just to check out a zoo. Brevard Zoo has been on our bucket list for a while and we finally managed a trip.
It did not disappoint, it delighted us!
This is a small zoo. If you blow through it quickly you could be finished in an hour or two. But that would miss some of what makes this such a wonderful place.
The made excellent use of the natural environment in constructing this zoo, retaining the natural flora. They used boardwalks, rather than a lot of concrete. It is very pleasant walking around this zoo as a result. There's lots of shade which I'm sure is even more appreciated at hotter times of the year.
The animal enclosures are well designed to provide a more complex environment for the inhabitants. As an example, many of the primate environments have tunnels/chutes between different parts of an enclosure....it's not just a plain rectangle. I'm sure this makes life more interesting for the animal inhabitants, and it makes the zoo experience more interesting for the human viewers, too.
The lemur exhibit also has an elevated platform that you can take to watch the lemurs at their level when they are up at the top of their enclosure. Fun!
You can feed kangaroos here. I can't think of another US zoo where this is possible. You can also feed lorikeets (similar to many other US zoos), but unlike many other zoos their lorikeet aviary is a mixed species aviary with other birds to enjoy. There are also coin operated machines where a quarter will yield you a handful of nuggets to feed deer, turkeys, etc.
But perhaps the best part of our day at the Brevard zoo was the wonderful interactions with the well informed docents. The docent at the black bear exhibit was especially knowledgeable and made our viewing of the black bears so much more enjoyable.
