Roper Lake State Park Gets Better Every Year!

点评：Over the past year, Arizona State Parks has untaken major improvements at Roper Lake. These include brand new restrooms, upgraded water infrastructure, and improved hiking trails. And something unique ... there's now a fully accessible kayak launch to allow those in wheelchairs to transfer into their boat and slide into the water! How great is that!
For me, birding is the main attraction at Roper Lake and its nearby unit, Dankworth Pond. Over January's MLK weekend, I helped lead two birding tours that were part of the Wings Over Willcox Birding & Nature Festival.
On Friday morning, we walked about halfway around the lake, starting at the floating fishing platform and going clockwise across the dam, up to the East Mesa Picnic Area, then following a well-defined trail to a peninsula that locals call "the island" to continue birding. That walk was about a mile and we spent about about two hours with many stops for to view birds through binoculars and a scope. On Sunday, we had a longer tour and walked the entire loop around the lake. That was about two miles and took us 3.5 hours, which included lunch on the island followed by our bus ride back to the visitor center. Here's aur bird list for the morning: https://ebird.org/checklist/S295032161.
One thing I'll mention about Roper Lake is the variety of lodging options available, from camping in your tent or SUV to RV space with and without hookups to wonderful little log cabins on the lake's edge. If I didn't live so close to Roper, that's what I'd be doing!
