My wife and I took a 30-day ornithological trip in November 2024, with Cesar Bollatty as our guide. During this journey, we visited Iquitos, the north of Tarapoto up to Chiclayo, including the Andes and the Maranon Valley, Machu Picchu, the Manu Road, and finally the Tambopata Reserve. The goal was to see as many "lifers" as possible on my second trip to Peru.
The trip was very well organized and went smoothly without any issues. Our expectations were far exceeded. In addition to 15 species of monkeys, we were able to observe over 700 different bird species, including more than 130 lifers. We also saw many rare and special bird species such as:
White-winged Guan, Wattled Curassow, Yellow-faced Parrotlet, Long-whiskered Owlet, Andean Potoo, Rufous-crested Croquette, Marvelous Spatuletail, Bearded Mountaineer, Little Woodstar, White-thgroated Jacamar, Rufous-necked Puffbird, Speckle-chested und Rufous-breasted Piccolet, Spot-zhroated Woodcreeper, Zimmers Woodcreeper, Russet-mantled Softtail, Ornate und chestnut-shouldered Antwren, Black-tailed, Slate-colored und Zimmers Antbird, 9 species of Antpittas, Maranon crescentchest, Cionnamon-faced Tyrannulet, Black and White and Lulus Tody Tyrant, Black-backed Tody Flycatcher, Change-Eyed Flacatcher, Andean Tyrant, Tumbes Tyrant, Rufous Flycatcxher, Chestnut-crested Cotinga, Scaled Fruiteater, Gray-mantled Wren, Pearly-breasted Conebill, Gray-winged Incafinch, Plain-tailed Warbling Finch, Black-billed Seedfinch, Pale-eyed Blackbird.
Many of these species we were able to observe very closely and also photograph.
Cesar Bollatty, with whom we had also previously traveled to Bolivia, once again demonstrated incredible patience and skill in finding the birds and showing them to us in the best possible way, making this trip as enjoyable as possible.
It was a fantastic birding experience!
