点评:The village of Kirriemuir knows how to celebrate its famous son, J.M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan, a story beloved of children old and young.
There's a museum in his birthplace, a quaint weaver's cottage; a garden with ticking crocodile, a small (non flowing) fountain in a quiet corner, and a Barrie pavillion housing the camera obscura donated to the community by the man himself.
For me, the best memorial - as a starting point - is the delicate statue of Peter Pan slap bang in the centre of the town square. You can hardly miss it and interest in it sends visitors to the other places, or at least gets them looking up the connection. There are other, much more active or decorated, statues of Peter around the world, but this one is a perfect, understated, Scottish symbol of quiet, justified pride in a local lad.
It originally stood in Glengate, but was damaged, so a replacement was made by the original artist, Alistair Smart, and that has been in its present situation for 30 years.
You may only spend a few minutes looking at it, or you may be lucky enough to gaze longer while listening to a full band playing (as I have twice), but I think the folk of Kirriemuir have this one just right. It's a super way to start a walk round the community treasures which mark the places that nurtured and influenced young James, who would go on to write one of the most popular fantasies of all.
