Beacon Country Park的点评
点评：I've been visiting The Beacon and surrounding land since the 70s. I've seen its gradual descent into its current vandalised state year after year. It seemed to suffer the most just after the COVID lockdown. Last time we visited, there was spray painted graffiti all over it, smashed bottles and general litter left all around it. There are also parts of the brick work and stoa missing now too.
I don't know why people have to vandalise things. This area was supposedly 'left for the enjoyment of the people of Skelmersdale' (or so I was told as a youngster). Now, there's the golf club (which did appear at the end of the 70s) and the ever-encroaching housing estates creeping their way up the hill. Shame.
There are some truly amazing views from the top and also from the hills nearer to the Rangers Centre near the wooden playground as you travel downhill towards Upholland/Billinge/Hall Green. There was a carving of the Grufallo a few years ago in the woodland there which was, again, vandalised. It's recently been re-done (we will see how long this one lasts!...)
There used to be the 'Green Fayre' every June in those woodlands which was fantastic - the visiting Viking camp was really good. The market stalls were rubbish - who knows who organised them but they were generally cheap sweets, car boot bits and a jewellery stall. Very odd. The rustic skills section in the woods was terrific. The dog show - ??? Bit pointless. Everyone would go for the Vikings and the Viking battles. Car parking was free and organised by the Boy Scouts or similar I believe.
To conclude, the scenery is great but the vandals have ruined it for everyone. I don't know why the Beacon monument isn't protected. Even the brass compass further across the summit was damaged the same year it was erected (1994).....
