An out of the ordinary petroglyph site and beautiful prairie

点评：This site is only open on Saturdays and only in the warmer months. It's $10 per person. The visitor center is nice, there is a very small shop.
The prairie here wasn't plowed up and cultivated because there is this big plate of sioux quartzite. This also served as a canvas for Native Americans to carve petroglyphs into. Because they are on the ground rather than on a vertical rock face as they generally are in the southwest, they are harder to make out. It also depends on the time of day and weather when you are there - we were there on a sunny early afternoon, which isn't great for viewing. You are not allowed to take pictures of the petroglyphs.
There are two trails, one that goes up to and through the petroglyph site and then around to a buffalo rub (taller piece of quartzite that buffalo rubbed off their winter coats on and polished smooth in the middle) and back to the visitor center and another loop through the prairie. There are signs in front of a lot of the petroglyphs showing you what to look for, and there are also guided tours.
They say that their tallgrass prairie is very high quality, and having seen prairie at Blue Mounds State Park, Pipestone National Monument, and Good Earth State Park, I would have to agree. It's very pretty in the autumn.
