点评:We have been going to Ocracoke for 20+ yrs and we have seen a lot change over that time, some good, some not so good, but we still love the island.
One of the biggest draws of going to Ocracoke is the beach. Over the last 20 yrs we have witnessed the NPS and regulations encroach on this summer past time by closing down more and more of the beach during prime season. Every year they close the entire south point seemingly pushing the closures further north up the beach, closing nearly 40% of the beach for +/- 100 birds.
Unfortunately what this means is that everyone that used to spread out along the open beach down to south point now cram into a confined space. The tranquility and privacy that used to be afforded to those that would visit Ocracoke beach has now been lost.
The NPS really needs to reconsider how it is managing these areas in the context of the % of beach being closed for an insignificant number of birds that are generally nesting in more protected areas away from the waterfront oriented areas of the beach.
RE-OPEN SOUTH POINT
