点评：I had high expectations for this tour, and it didn’t disappoint.
We visited sites in Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Not all of them were on the list posted on the company’s website for the tour, but except for the cottages in the Berkshires, I thought they were all excellent choices. For several places there were guides or an introductory talk, and for others we were on our own. The walking tour of Boston was fascinating because we were lucky enough to have a guide who had an astounding knowledge of the city’s history and was passionate about it. He was even dressed in period clothing. The Trapp family lodge in Vermont was beautiful and the talks and a short film there gave insights into the story behind the classic movie The Sound of Music. Robert Todd Lincoln’s Hildene, also in Vermont, was another fascinating spot and the grounds were beautiful and peaceful. In Maine we took a short cruise on a lobster boat with a guide who knew a lot about lobsters and the area.
Other places on the tour were a sugar house, the Omni Mount Washington Hotel in New Hampshire, Moulton Farm, also in NH, and the capital of Vermont, Montpelier. In NH we rode the cog railway up to the top of Mount Washington. There was also a cruise across Lake Winnipesauke.
All the lodgings were higher-end and rooms were usually spacious. The Essex Resort and Spa in Vermont was exceptional, not only for the room, but for the tranquil environment. The breakfasts and dinners that were included were particularly good, although it would have been nice to have more of a selection of main courses. I found the bus to be comfortable, and I was grateful that our tour director Debbie did not jabber away incessantly while we were traveling. Debbie knew a lot about the places we visited and was able to answer all my questions. She was also friendly and patient. Our driver, Clyde, also knew the area well, and I never experienced a moment of nervousness with him at the wheel.
There were some minor negative aspects of the tour including the fact that the hotel in Boston wasn’t prepared for the breakfast crowd the day we departed, and I was uncertain as to whether some tips were already paid, and probably other small glitches. None of these detracted from the overall remarkable trip.
