点评:We stayed a week at Shute Barton with family and friends six years ago over our Silver Wedding, returning last week to do the same thing again to celebrate a 60th birthday.
The habitable elements of the house are spacious and well heated, also featuring log burners in the dining and sitting rooms. You will need a copious supply of logs which can be sourced from Miller's Farm Shop just up the road in Kilmington.
It is worth noting that the gatehouse at the end of the driveway is rented out by the Landmark Trust (not National Trust,) so we decided to rent both to make best use of the site.
Turning right as you leave the courtyard starts a very pleasant circular walk which takes you past the huge Georgian Shute House. Ignore that Strictly Private signs; this is a public footpath. Follow the footpath signs to the top af the hill, remembering to pause and take in the views down to the sea. Turn left at the summit and its all downhill past the church and back to the gatehouse.
The NT staff who maintain the house do an excellent and mostly unseen job. It snowed heavily the day before we left and they were out gritting the courtyard before we loaded the car.
If you have a special event to host for whatever reason, this is a unique place to stay.
