点评:There is a great cycling/walking path alongside the Lalinde canal. Lalinde is a lovely, old, fortified ‘bastide’ town and we really enjoyed cycling along its old towpaths.
The route stretches over about 15km and the path is has a mostly smooth surface for flat, easy cycling.
Opened in 1843, the canal belongs to an era where transport of goods relied on waterways and shipping. Roads and rail were in the future.
It served as a freight transport channel for all kinds of goods - wood, iron ore, charcoal, barrels of tannin or maybe wine. Incoming boats could be laden with exotic colonial goods like sugar, coffee, salt, and spices.
It was interesting to see the old locks, aqueducts, and lock-keepers' houses. We stopped briefly to check out the ‘Tuilières staircase’, a long, U-shaped trough which runs downhill with a series of stepped locks.
The canal was eventually decommissioned in 1926 but was listed as an historic monument in 1996.
We also stopped briefly in Lalinde for a coffee and snack at the Catnat Cafe, a convenient, open-air spot in the central market place.
