点评:13 of us (members of RSPB and Essex Wildlife Trust) enjoyed a bespoke tour. We visited the beaver enclosures and had a three hour guided walk around the extensive estate.
We saw how they are enhancing natural ecosystems including those whose target populations are as diverse as dormice, bats, turtledoves and raptors. Hedgerows are being reinstated and developed, new woodland planted, ponds scraped and acres of hazelnut and walnut trees planted for a future cash crop interspersed with swards of wildflowers with potential to be rented by sympathetic smallholders in the future.
Initially the cost seemed expensive, but without exception we were filled with a sense of wonder at the remarkable achievements of the beavers. Our guide, Sarah (ecologist and head of conservation) is inspirational in her knowledge and passion for wildlife, and effective land-use.
We will be returning soon at night to see the beavers in action, and in the mid future to see how the initiatives progress.
