点评:The Hornby Lighthouse is the main feature on the South Head Heritage Trail. This is an easy walk to do as part of a day trip to Watsons Bay.
The views as we approached the lighthouse were spectacular. We stopped to look out across Sydney harbour and we could see right across to North Head and Manly.
The lighthouse itself is also very striking.
It’s a traditional-looking, tapered tower, about 9 metres tall. What makes it really stand out is the candy-like red and white stripes which were added to distinguish it from the nearby Macquarie Lighthouse.
The lighthouse was built in 1858, following two tragic shipwrecks, the ‘Dunbar’ and the ‘Catherine Adamson’.
Outside of war-time, the Dunbar was the worst shipwreck in Australian history. Gale-force winds smashed it to pieces against the South Head rocks and there was only one survivor out of 122 on board.
The old lighthouse keeper’s house, a simple sandstone cottage, is nearby. Its been kept in very good condition but it was of limited interest because it’s not open to the public.
The lighthouse is also closed to the public. You can walk up the very short flight of stairs that lead to the front door but you can't go any further.
