点评:When walking from Ermoupolis towards Ano Syros a visitor will usually go all the way to the top of the 188m high hill, where Agios Georgios, the main Catholic Church of the island, often called a cathedral, is located. The edifice dates from the 1830's, the decade after the Greek Revolution, when most of the big churches also down in Ermoupolis were built.
The architect of the church was a marble sculptor from Tinos, an island famous all over Greece for this type of profession. It is a basilica with a vaulted ceiling and three naves, separated by thin marble columns. The floor consists of black and white flagstones, arranged like a chessboard. That it is not an orthodox church one will see from the many benches, the organ above the entrance, the confessional box, the sculptures and the Western style paintings.
My eye got caught by an unusual painting of a standing Saint George with the white horse, he is usually seen riding, behind him, and next to him the princess he saved from the dragon. In the vestibule it was interesting to look at a marble plaque with the list of the churches bishops. Apart from two early mentions the list goes pretty continuously from 1246 till today. In the old days the majority of the clerics bore French or Italian names, after 1825 mostly Greek ones.
Outside the church are several other buildings, which were closed, when I visited.
