A great introduction to river cruising
Emerald Star - Le Boat - Carrick-on-Shannon的点评
点评：Having never done a river cruise before, we were a little nervous, but upon boarding our Vision 3 boat in Carrick on Shannon I was very happy to be spending a week onboard.
The cons: the flooring in the cabins was uneven, with planks sticking up so much as to catch on shoes and socks, especially in the rear cabin (so much as to prove a tripping hazard). Disappointing for a Comfort Plus boat.
Our outdoor plancha/flat bbq (that was one of the main reasons for booking this boat) didn't work, and the in-galley microwave oven didn't work. The small bbq fixed to the side of the boat did work, so we were able to do a little outdoor cooking.
The pros: The Vision 3 has a fantastic galley, especially when cooking for a group. It's well equipped, and a pleasure to use - just like a kitchen at home, with lots of worktop space. The gas oven and hob worked great, and the galley was well equipped with everything you might need to prepare a meal from scratch. Lots of bowls, plates, cutlery etc were provided.
3 very spacious cabins, with sliding windows to let in fresh air, and good light-blocking curtains. The bedding was clean, and comfortable.
Apart from the flooring issue, the cabins were great. The ensuites were clean, and spacious. This boat would be perfect for 3 couples, where each could have their own room and bathroom.
We were able to hook a laptop up to the tv (a good size, and good picture) to watch a couple of movies on evenings where the weather wasn't good and we didn't want to go out.
The pre-cruise briefing at Carrick on Shannon was informative, and really useful - very well done, Carrick Craft!
The Vision 3 is a big craft, and while us 3 adults were mostly able to manage it as first time boating people, ideally we would have booked something shorter for our first time. The locks were manageable, but somewhat stressful at times (we found that the locks where the older lock keepers offered lots of direction were more stressful than those where a teenager pointed to where you were to go.. you went... the whole lock thing happened, and you left again).
The steering spot upstairs is great for visibility (but not always pleasant in Ireland's weather), but we didn't use the indoor steering spot because the boat was a bit too long for us to use it confidently.
We found ourselves standing out on top in the rain, so bring waterproof clothing/hats/eyewear as you may need them (a drizzle on land was more problematic on the river, as the breeze meant you might feel it more). However, even in inclement weather, when it felt as though the boat was rocking from the steering position on top, it was very calm below deck, and nobody suffered from any kind of seasickness or unease.
We found ourselves unable to pull away from berths during high winds, and because of the position of the boat in front of us, and a pontoon to the left, we had to stay another night as we couldn't get out of our mooring (we asked the boat in front to move up a little, but there was a language barrier - many nationalities use the river). The bow and stern thrusters were great in ordinary circumstances, but in strong winds they were of no use.
In this situation, we called Emerald Star for advice, and they offered to send out someone to help us the following morning - we didn't need to avail of this offer in the end as the wind eased, but the fact that they were there and able to help was very reassuring, and a great comfort!
Overall, this was a great introduction to a river cruising holiday. The boat, apart from the flooring issue in the bedrooms, and the plancha on deck not working, was great. It was spacious, easy to keep clean, and very well equipped.
We brought our very excitable dog, but with his life jacket on, we were confident in his safety. He had a great time.
I would have no hesitation to book another boat with Le Boat, but I might book a smaller boat with only 3 adults onboard.
