点评:Installed in 2011 atop Two Mile Hill, Daphne Mennell’s “The Horse of Whitehorse” (also called the “Whitehorse Horse”) is constructed entirely of recycled metals. Weighing more than two tonnes, and standing over three metres high, this “recycled” sculpture overlooks the city of Whitehorse like a beacon of cultural and social memory; however, it also serves a dual purpose: While the “Whitehorse Horse” functions as a cultural vessel of memories, it also suggests how a community – a cultural mosaic – can come together and celebrate a rich and varied heritage in the here and now. This latter interpretation, I think, is most fitting, especially given how Whitehorse has diversified in the last decade.
When Daphne Mennell began working on the sculpture in 2009, she put a callout to Yukoners across the Territory for donations of scrap metal. It was a slow process that took nearly two years but, when it was all said and done, Mennell received donations from more than 200 people clear across the Yukon. Thus, when she and welder Roger Poole began putting the sculpture together, it very much became a “community” project in the sense that each piece came from every corner of the Yukon: Each chunk of scrap metal has its own story – comes from its own time and place – and highlights a “community’s” story. Indeed, when one realizes this, the sculpture becomes doubly beautiful: A sense of togetherness in an otherwise fragmented time.
Whitehorse, as a city, is very much the hub of the Yukon Territory: When you visit the Yukon, be it by air, rail or car, you will inevitably pass through Whitehorse. You will shop, visit and leave your mark. That is why the “Horse of Whitehorse” is such a powerful contemporary sculpture: It captures not just the essence of a city, but of a whole Territory and community – and it’s such a beautiful thing.
