点评:We owe the success of our trip to 'Sant'Antonio'. Here's the story.
We're Italian Americans. Our ancestors all came from the region around Naples. My father's father's people came from a small hill town about 30 miles east of Naples called San Fele.
Antonio picked us up in Naples and drove us there. His English was good, so he told us about the areas we were driving through to get to San Fele.
A member of our family had injured their foot. When we got there, we realized that climbing up and down the steep streets of San Fele wasn't going to happen.
Sant'Antonio to the rescue! Despite the fact he's married and has two kids, he stayed with us for 3 extra hours and drove us to dinner and then back to our AirBNB's.
We liked him so much that we retained his services for the whole week. He drove us all up and down the Amalfi coast and eventually back to Naples airport.
I'd say that we become friends - if such a thing is possible in such a short period of time. We nicknamed him 'Sant'Antonio' because of his help that night in San Fele and then because of all the great, out of the way, places he showed us all along the Amalfi coast. My brother, who's a musician, even made up a goofy song for Sant'Antonio that he set to a classic tarantella. Antonio rolled with laughter when he heard it!
His English is good. He is meticulously punctual. His van is comfortable. He is a warm, funny guy. He grew up in the area and seems to enjoy the role of amateur tour guide. Best of all, he's happy to help - in whatever particular way you might need.
We plan to return to Italy to trace the roots of our other three grandparents. We have his contact info and he's said that, if we give him a few weeks notice, he'll do some homework and find fun and historical stuff to do in the other small towns we know our ancestors came from.
