点评：The Gamble House in Pasadena, California, is the finest example of early 20th century American Craftsman architecture, an internationally recognized masterpiece of the American Arts and Crafts Movement. So what is the Arts and Crafts Movement? It has three main characteristics: (1) simplicity of design, (2) natural elements and (3) a belief that objects must be well made and useful as well as decorative. The Movement is against mass production, excessive ornamentation and unfair treatment of workers. With that in mind, in 1908 and 1909, Pasadena-based architects Charles and Henry Greene designed the house and furnishings for David and Mary Gamble of the Proctor & Gamble Company. Located at 4 Westmoreland Place, off Orange Grove Avenue's former Millionaire Row, a mile north of the Wrigley Mansion, near the Rose Bowl and Norton Simon Museum, the 8,100-square-foot, three-story home sits atop a grassy knoll, preserved with all its original furniture. The entire house, starting with its stained glass front door, evokes a Japanese feel. The exterior is characterized by its broad, sloping roofs and overhanging eaves, extensive use of clinker brick and hand-sculpted wood rafters. Inside, visitors are impressed with the teak and mahogany woodwork, maple cabinets, built-in window seats and bookcases, lighting fixtures, stained glass, intricately designed carpets, large terraces and expansive windows. There are four bedrooms, four bathrooms, living room, dining room, kitchen, private study, storage attic, cascading staircase with interlocking joinery and servant's hall and rooms. Don't forget the lush gardens and koi pond. One-hour guided tours are available on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. The Gamble House has been designated a National Historic Landmark and a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and added to the National Register of Historic Places.
