点评:3-Day / 2-Night Knuckles Trek with Hema
We are a couple (31 and 32) and did Hema's 3-day/2-night tour ("Option 2," the harder route through the Knuckles Mountain Range). The price was 500 USD for the two of us together.
**The tour in short.**
Day 1: a ~2-hour drive north into the Knuckles, then a fairly steep jungle trek up to the summit and grassland, with an overnight at a village homestay. Day 2: an easier walk through paddy fields, villages and spice gardens (cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, cocoa, nutmeg), a swim in a rock pool, then a drive east to a lakeside campsite. Day 3: an early canoe trip for birdwatching, breakfast, a waterfall hike, and the drive back to Kandy. The price includes the Knuckles entrance fees, camping and canoe charges, herbal leech protection, vehicle/fuel/driver, guide and porter, plus all accommodation and food.
We came away with two fairly different impressions, so we share both.
**His view (3–4 / 5).**
Overall positive. Day 1 was a genuine trek: about 15 km and 1,000 m of ascent through the protected Knuckles zone, which — as far as we could find out — you may only enter with a licensed Knuckles guide. It is very quiet; we met only two other hikers. Hema and his team pointed out plants and animals now and then, though you don't see a huge amount of wildlife. The scenery, however, is wonderfully wild. Hema himself no longer seems very fit (possibly an injury), so the last steep section we did with the porter. The food throughout is outstanding rice & curry. The homestay was okay if a little quirky. The clear highlight was the remote lakeside campsite on Day 2: beautiful, secluded nature, swimming in the lake (harmless monitor lizards live there), a kayak trip during which we watched an elephant on the shore, fresh grilled fish for dinner, and the sounds of the jungle at night. Hema kept every arrangement he had promised, which we really appreciated, and he is a pleasant driver and companion. Some of his stories feel exaggerated or not quite accurate, which makes him an interesting character but also hard to place. He says he now owns a travel company with around 25 staff and rarely guides himself.
**Her view (2–2.5 / 5).**
She enjoyed the tour less. Hema focused mainly on her partner and barely addressed her, which at times felt dismissive. He only explained things when asked directly, and several of his stories seemed hard to believe, so she never quite knew what to make of him and couldn't fully relax into the experience. That said, she agrees the lake and the food were excellent.
**Our verdict (about 3 / 5).**
Recommendable, but don't expect the most intense guiding or the deepest explanations of flora and fauna. The nature — especially the lake — is beautiful and the food is superb. At 500 USD for two, the tour is expensive by Sri Lankan standards, and prices among the few licensed Knuckles guides seem fairly fixed. Two of the three days could be done on your own if you can find the spots yourself. Worth doing if you go in with realistic expectations.
