Learn what it was like to mine coal 814 miles from the North Pole!

点评：Our tour guide was Michael at Gruve (Mine site) #3. He did an amazing job of giving us the feel of working in a coal mine.
We started in a small building where Michael laid out the mine and how they were extracting extremely pure coal (95+ carbon) from a seam that was only 60cm thick. We then got our helmets and headlights for the 500 metre walk into the mine. Some of us also put on coveralls so we could crawl into the coal seam like the miners did just a few years ago.
While we were deep in the mountain we made two stops. First we stopped at the Arctic World Archive. This storage site contains microfiche copies of information from around the world.
Second at the Nordic Seed Bank that maintains ampules and vacuum sealed packages containing seeds from many different sources.
This is an amazing glimpse into life in this region with an opportunity to learn how coal mining is performed in this part of the Arctic.
You may even learn about the Svalbard Treaty!
