A Day on The Verdon
Riviera fly-fishing的点评
点评：My family and I traveled to Nice, France to spend time in the beautiful Côte d'Azur before heading North to Paris for the '24 Summer Olympic Games. My family loves France and French culture, and being a lifelong Pennsylvanian fly fisherman, I couldn't help but combine both passions on this trip.
Research began in January of '24 with a Google search for "Nice France Fly Fishing" and Guillaume Durand's guide service "Riviera fly-fishing" was found. Some digging on Tripadvisor yielded pictures of stunning scenes of streamscapes, trout, and smiling people. I quickly reached out with an exploratory email. Guillaume responded within 24 hours in excellent English. After a few replies, the July '24 date was booked. All that was left to do was tie some flies!
Initially, an ex-pat fishing friend of mine would join me on this trip, driving from Western Germany to meet me in France. Life took over, and he had to bail about a month from the anticipated trip. I again reached out to Guillaume, explained the situation, and his prompt reply outlined that although unfortunate, this allowed us to focus on my technique all the better. This was the first inkling of Guillaume's passion for instruction.
Mid-July finally arrived, and the family packed up and headed out on our trans-Atlantic journey. We arrived in Nice and spent time seeing the sights and enjoying the culture in the French Riviera.
Before I knew it, I was tossing and turning in anticipation for the next day's fishing adventure. I hopped in the car around 6 am to allow time to brave the Nice rush hour, putting me at my destination of Castellane around 8am. Having driven in France on previous trips, I wasn't nervous about the drive but was definitely pumped to fish. Turns out, Google Maps had a little pre-adventure adventure for me. It put me on a VERY windy small road, carved out of limestone rock faces for the majority of my trek North. Think blind corners and cyclists taking up your lane. The whole time. It was exhilarating to say the least. My advice, double-check the route and stick to the big roads!
I arrived in Castellane a little late due to bike-dodging, but I found Guillaume easily as he was the only guy putting on waders in the parking lot. After greetings (Guillaume's spoken English was excellent) and early trip-intel were exchanged, we headed to the town tourist office to purchase a fishing license. The ladies at the front desk also spoke excellent English, reply perfecting in English as I stumbled through my broken French.
License-in-hand, Guillaume and I got in his car and headed out of town to the first spot. He explained that the trout in the Verdon River are very well-educated as relates to Euro-nymphing. This was foreshadowing for the day in a big way.
We arrived at the first spot and I was stunned by its beauty, complete with a massive rock face and powder blue water. It was a "Bluebird" day and hot, but the water hit my legs (I was wet-wading) and I noticed the temperature. Some might call it cold, but refreshing is more accurate. We tried some dries first to no avail, and we switched to nymphs.
So here goes... I've fished many of Pennsylvania's famous trout streams over the last 35 years. Wild, stocked, Steelhead, Salmon...you name it, I've caught it... The trout in the Verdon are very, very smart. I'd call them "twitchy". They hit and spit a nymph almost faster than the eye can comprehend. No joke. Also, they lie in water that you would ignore elsewhere. Guillaume's earlier comment was completely accurate. I missed numerous fish early. Guillaume grabs the rod, casts into "nothing" water, and sets on maybe the best fish of the day. Guillaume can fish, no doubt about it!
Mr. Durand is an outstanding teacher. After that fish, he explained every aspect that led to success. From the trout's "lie", his presentation, and his reaction to the take. After each cast I made, he would reply with a "very good" or a "nice one," positively reinforcing what he needed to enable client success. As mentioned, he has a true passion and gift for instruction, and the techniques and mindsets learned on the river that day are invaluable.
What a day it was. Fish were caught and stories and laughs were exchanged. After having months back to evaluate the trip, I value the experiences that day as much (if not more) than the Parisian Olympic journey that ensued after. Book the trip!
