点评：I visited the R.M. Brooks General Store last week at the suggestion of Linda Brooks Jones, the proprietor of a nearby bed-and-breakfast; Linda's family founded the store just over 100 years ago. Having just gorged myself on one of Linda's breakfasts, I was in no position to sample the store's menu, but I got a hearty welcome and could see that the place is well set up to offer tasty and filling breakfasts and lunches. An additional space has been built on to increase table seating, and besides food, you can purchase various gifts and souvenirs.
R.M. Brooks, on Highway 52 perhaps 80 miles northwest of Knoxville, is just down the road from Historic Rugby, Tennessee, a community from the 1880s that is open for tours and lodging. Rugby had its own restaurant, which burnt down a few years ago; it is now being rebuilt, but in the interim, R.M. Brooks has served as a go-to spot for Rugby guests to get something to eat. But eating or not, it is a great place to just stop in, look around, and enjoy the atmosphere. As another reviewer has pointed out, going to R.M. Brooks is like finding yourself in Mayberry.
There is a well-known restaurant chain that seeks to recreate the atmosphere, menu, and decor of places like R.M. Brooks, and the chain is quite popular, and I enjoy eating there. But coming to R.M. Brooks makes you realize that this is no imitation--it's the real thing: residents of a small town offering good, down-home hospitality and delicious food, in a relaxing atmosphere. Everyone should visit Rugby, and everyone should make R.M. Brooks a part of their experience there.
