点评:A little off the beaten path (and down a long dirt road between the grapevines and rows of corn), Franklin Hill Vineyards was a great stop as we crossed Pennsylvania. Our midweek visit came in late afternoon and we had the vineyard and tasting room all to ourselves. The couple of staff members we met were engaging and enthusiastic about the property and the operation. They were eager to share info about the history of the vineyard and winery and very welcoming.
The tasting room is reasonably large with a large bar/counter and a number of pedestal tables and chair. Attached to the tasting room is an expansive deck with a large amount of seating and a nice canopied area to reduce the impact of sun or inclement weather. Although we were the only ones enjoying this almost Autumn afternoon, I can imagine that on most weekend the deck and patio are overflowing with visitors, music, etc. We opted to each enjoy a wine flight, which featured generous pours of 5 wines. The selection was wide and varied with a good number of reds and whites. Unlike many other wineries that we have visited, there was an excellent selection of sweeter wines available, many with hints of berry. The drier wines tended to be blends and were not as appealing (to me) as if they had been pure varietals. The young lady in the tasting room was very knowledgeable regarding every wine and was able to provide great direction and recommendations.
Each wine in the flight had its own character and appeal and all were excellent - so good, in fact, that a case of their offerings made its way to the car.
Like many vineyards, this one does not allow outside food. Unlike many that prohibit food, Franklin Hills has an outstanding offering of "sharables" including the Dip Sampler that we ordered. Fresh veggies, pretzels, pita bread, and three incredible dips. For around $30, our two flights and the dip platter was a great value and more than adequate to satisfy our hunger and give us a taste of what they offered.
Overall this was a fantastic find as we worked out way across PA and we look forward to a return visit.
