点评：I have seen the exterior of the building a few times without ever being able to enter. (was always in the area on weekends) This time I was visiting during the week and was able to take a guided tour. I would recommend everyone to do so. The facts you get from the guide are so helpful in understanding what you are seeing. You can walk around without a tour, but it wouldn't be the same. Plus, you wouldn't be able to get to the top of the Dome if you aren't on the tour. Circling the top of the Dome was one of the highlights of the tour. I was surprised to learn that Colorado became a state in 1876. That is only 100 years after we became a country. (This year, they will turn 150 years old, in August) This is why some call Denver the "Centennial State." The Colorado State house was constructed in the 1890's. It opened in 1894 but wasn't yet completely finished. The building was completed in 1901, but the Dome wasn't completed until 1908. The material used for the building were all from Colorado. It is constructed with Colorado white granite, rare rose onyx and the cast iron dome is covered in copper panels that are gilded with gold leaf from the Colorado mines. The gold is a memento of the Colorado gold rush. The tour begins at the grand stair case and from there you will see the beautiful Rose Onyx marble on the walls and the white yule marble on the floor. When you are at the Grand Stair case you can look up and get a dramatic view of the rotundas interior. When you are in the rotunda you can look up and see you are under the dome. The building is an Architectural Treasure both inside and out. Many of the windows are made of stained glass depicting people or events related to the history of Colorado. If you are near the building during the week, get a tour and awe its beauty and learn a little about the State of Colorado.
