Up close with a herd of alpacas on a breeding farm made for memorable holiday

点评：We stayed two nights above a barn housing their most precious animals - pregnant, new borns and alpacas that have been sold. This is to keep them protected from injuries or accidents if they were to be left outdoors. Other residents of the barn included Daisy the rescued miniature pot bellied pig and a clowder of cats.
They have 150 alpacas on the 38-acre Buck Brook Alpacas farm in Roscoe in the western Catskills, ~2 hours drive from New York. They have two breeds of alpacas - the teddybear looking Huacaya (pronounced wah-KI-ah) and the Suri (pronounced SOO-ree) with dreadlocks. Among them are some prize winning champions.
We had an informative tour of the farm starting at the barn with the opportunity to touch and feel the different grades of alpaca fibre, as they are called. A team of shearers from Australia visit the farm in May every year for shearing. The sheared alpaca fibres which are soft (softer than cashmere) and hollow (hence warmer than lambs wool) are graded manually on site and then sent to mills to spin into yarn. Unlike sheep wool they are not greasy due to only minimal lanolin content. The softest and dearest fibres come from the under-year-old crias (baby alpacas). On the farm they have a shop with a range of alpaca goods on sale.
Alpaca poo is relatively nitrogen poor and odour-free. Hence they can be applied directly to plants without the need for composting. Thus, they are prized liked gold by gardeners. A 25-pound bag of the scybalous alpaca poo sells for $40. And as alpacas do their business in piles, collecting the pellets is not excessively laborious!
On the farm they also raise a small herd of miniature Nigerian goats and Angora rabbits and peacocks (which we could not see) plus a couple of lamas who do guard duties.
The Airbnb atop the barn can sleep 6 adults. It is well equipped with fridge-freezer, cooker, oven etc together with pots and pans as also crockery and cutlery. The place is largely furnished with the alpaca leitmotif everywhere (on wall hangings, cushions and artefacts). One bedroom alone had an equine theme. Very comfortable beds and altogether a most enjoyable stay.
