点评:What an absolutely AMAZING experience for all of the family!!
My family and I visited lindos midweek and saw those poor donkeys ferrying heavier set people up the steep streets to the acropolis and my daughter commented how unhappy the donkeys seemed. Upon returning to our hotel we mentioned the experience to one of the staff and they said we MUST go and visit Donkey cruise as a way to see how happy donkey’s behave.
We found their details and messaged via WhatsApp and had a timely response, booked for the next day, as we didn’t hire a car they also agreed to fetch us from our hotel.
We were met the next day by a very charismatic ‘donkey grandma’ who made us all feel welcome from the outset and gave us loads of information about the donkeys and the surrounding area, all whilst putting us at ease.
When we arrived Christos and Valeria (hope I have her name correct) introduced themselves and their beautiful donkey clan to us and a few other families that had driven there themselves.
We were immediately struck with the condition of the donkeys, comparatively to the poor ones we had witnessed at lindos, these donkeys all had perfectly trimmed hooves, had well cared for coats, and came to you rather than shied away….these we HAPPY donkey’s indeed!
After getting time to groom some of them and familiarize ourselves with them, our two daughters were sat upon Yanni and Sambika (though I thought of him as sambuca).
Our youngest, fearless as she is didn’t bat an eyelid and immediately became at ease, our eldest however was petrified of falling off, all three of them, donkey grandma, christos and Valeria picked up on her fear and gave such wonderful support to her, so much so, after only ten minutes riding she was away on her own laughing and smiling…it is these moments that you see the true nature of people, this is not a business to these three, their donkeys and their home really is their heart.
On the trek we stopped off at the most wonderful 12th century church with very rare fresco’s and it was a privilege to view them, and when coupled with home made (from the farm) food it was magical.
I truly cannot recommend enough Donkey Cruise to anyone who visits Rhodes, not only do you see how genuine humans treat donkeys who otherwise had harsh lives, but you get to experience, be it only a few hours, authentic Rhodes.
I expect all our children will mention in years to come when we speak of Rhodes will be Yanni and Sambika and how nice Donkey Grandma, Christos, and Valeria were!!!
