点评:Being men of a certain vintage and very much not in the first flush of youth, and thus concerned that we might not be up to the rigours of the full seven day route march, Manolis, at my request, kindly concocted a five day itinerary for our delight and delectation. Such encompassed three days of walking, and two days of vehicular travel and museum visits. It proved to be the perfect combination of endeavour and sloth. The day upon which we followed the trail of the abductors over the flank of Mount Ida was a truly memorable one. In so many ways. It even encompassed stumbling across a Cretan shepherd who insisted that we join him in his mountain eyrie for coffee, cheese and biscuits. The much vaunted Cretan hospitality, of which Paddy Leigh Fermor and Billy Moss oft waxed lyrical, is clearly very much alive. For one who has, for years, lived in awe of the life and work of Paddy Leigh Fermor, and who never envisaged he would get to walk in his footsteps, this whole venture was a truly memorable and moving experience.
