Two weeks after the drive, we asked when the deposit would be released.
Response? None.
Only 3.5 weeks later were we informed that the amount would be retained.
Reason given: allegedly driving in the wrong direction on Chapman’s Peak. Cost: R30,000 (~€1,600).
This supposedly serious rule was never clearly and unmistakably explained during the morning briefing, nor was it mentioned at vehicle return. If a single rule violation costs several times the rental price, it should be more than a small clause buried in paperwork.
The timing of the notification is noteworthy: The information arrived exactly when the charge could be processed without issue.
- No damage.
- No accident.
- No danger.
But €800 penalty per vehicle.
Additionally, both Cobras had repeated starting issues. We did not complain or request compensation. Goodwill, however, appears to be one-sided.
In the end, it leaves the impression that the business model focuses less on the driving experience and more on contractual penalties.
