点评:I know, I know - is already the summer of 2025 and I'm still writing about the summer past - truth be told I'm behind with my reviews - big time.
So here it is - the Fortification of Rhodes.
What can be seen today is what have remained - mostly - from the fortification that were erected by the knights of St. John over the existing Byzantine fortifications - modified , incorporating those, strengthening and rebuilding where it was necessary during the period they've ruled the island of Rhodes ( between 1310 and 1522).
Now for sure a lot of fortifications from the medieval times - like fortified cities have disappeared , in Rhodes is not the case , those were preserved after the ottoman conquest rebuilt ( here and there expanded) because the ottomans needed those walls too.
As per today it is one best preserved sites in the world - no wonder it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
When in Rhodes you can have a tour of the fortifications , or you can do it by yourself simply by walking around the city walls, sometimes in the moat ( that is dry and lost its original functionality ) and you can think back to the engineering skills of the Knights of St. John dating back to at least 6 centuries ( and even more).
So when in Rhodes, if you are interested in medieval history and engineering for city defenses, the fortifications are a great starting point for the historical immersion.
