点评:Recanati is a much under-rated town. It amazes me that out of 43 reviews for the tower, only 5 are by foreign tourists. Its a shame that so few overseas visitors make it to this beautiful part of the Italian countryside.
If you are visiting the more well-known town of Loreto, Recanati is very close and is worth stopping at, even if it’s only a quick visit.
The Torre del Borgo is one of the main sights in the town’s historic centre and is located in the centre of the main square.
Standing at 36 metres tall, it catches your eye immediately.
Close-up, there’s a lot of detail. Although I’d seen it before, this time we did a slow lap around the square tower. Starting from the side that faces the piazza, there is a memorial commemorating the sacrifices made in WWI, a 16th century white stone clock, and a large 17th century bronze relief depicting the dramatic scene where the Holy House of Loreto is miraculously transported by flights of angels to Italy.
Heading around to our right, was the entrance for those who wanted to climb the tower to and visit the museum inside.
Further around, is a white marble lion (the work of the famous Andrea Sansovino) and an excerpt of a poem by Recanati’s most famous son, Giacomo Leopardi. He’s the fellow you see in the middle of the piazza. You can’t walk around Recanati without tripping over references to Leopardi. Similar plaques can be seen throughout Recanati, celebrating the much-loved poet.
