In 2003, it overtook the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota to become the largest art museum in Florida. Founded in 1941 by Ralph Hubbard Norton, former head of the Chicago-based Acme Steel Company, the four-story, 122,500-square-foot, Art Deco/Neoclassical building includes a 50,000-square-feet of gallery space, 43-foot-high Great Hall, a 9,000-square-foot sculpture garden, a 210-seat auditorium, a restaurant, a Chihuly glass ceiling, an education center and classrooms. Open from 10 to 5 on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, 10 to 10 on Friday and 11 to 5 on Sunday, visitors can view noteworthy paintings by Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough,Giovanni Panini, Jacopo Da Firenze, Jan Thomas Yperen and Lucas Cranach the Elder.
