点评:I’ve been fortunate to visit many wineries throughout Italy and Palazzone did not disappoint. A somewhat short drive from Orvieto (you can see the town in the distance), Palazzone is absolutely stunning. It was early spring, so the weather was still a bit cool, and the vines hadn’t started showing signs of life, but the forests and grass were green and beautiful. Our group opted for the wine tour with lunch. We received a tour of the winery and the caves dating back to Etruscan times where a few wines are stored. The caves were very cool. We had a total of 5 wines, 4 with lunch. As I expected, the whites were very good, the red was very big, and the dessert was a fabulous surprise. Orvieto is apparently the only region in Italy (excepting individual vineyards) where Noble rot occurs naturally, meaning the dessert wine is not a Passito as is fairly common in Italy, but more in line with Sauternes. Lunch was indoors due to the cool weather, but we saw the area where lunch is served in warmer weather and I’m jealous of those who get to experience it. The food itself was good and paired well with the wines as one would expect. The winery does have wines for sale including a bit of a library for those interested in some slightly older vintages. The only advice I have for those planning a visit is that if you do not have a car and are relying on a taxi, the taxis can be a bit slow, especially on the weekend. Upon arrival at Orvieto train station, we had to call for a taxi even though everyone said there are “always” taxis waiting at the station, and their arrival took about 15-20 minutes. Thankfully, the wonderful people at Palazzone waited for us when we told them of the delay. Then, when trying to return to Orvieto, it took close to an hour for a cab to come get us, so be aware, and ask the staff at Palazzone to call for a cab around when dessert is served. I suspect weekday visits don’t have these issues, but can’t say for certain.
