It was a sunny afternoon, and our large family group had just finished visiting the lighthouse in Fujisawa. We were preparing to continue our journey to the next landmark when, as we descended from the lighthouse, my wife started feeling unwell and urgently needed to use the washroom at the base.
Since we were unfamiliar with the area and didn’t want to get separated or lost, all 11 of us decided to wait outside the restroom for her. About five minutes later, my wife was ready, and we headed toward the exit gate.
However, when we scanned the QR code to leave, the gate flashed red and wouldn’t open for any of us. Confused, we approached a staff member for help. It was around 5:05 PM.
We calmly explained that we had no intention of staying for the evening events, which officially began at 5:00 PM. We had simply been delayed for a few minutes due to an unavoidable restroom emergency. Despite our explanation, the staff refused to make any exception and insisted that we all pay the full price for the evening show.
Pressed for time and needing to get to our next destination, we had no choice but to pay the fee. The staff emphasized that they were Japanese and everything had to be punctual and by the book. But from the perspective of a tourist, the entire experience felt inflexible and unfair—almost like a trap.
In the end, that brief 5-minute delay and an additional 10-minute argument cost us JPY 5,000 (around USD $35). All because of an unexpected bathroom emergency.
